Leading community membership body applauds government commitment to community led housing

Community housing

Locality welcomes the announcement today by the Housing Minister to allocate £60 million a year to help the community led housing sector to grow.

The Community Housing Fund will provide crucial funding to help community organisations to build more affordable homes that meet the needs of communities across the country.

Housing Minister Alok Sharma said:

“We have committed to continue to provide a further £60 million each year until at least 2019/20 which totals an investment of £240 million over four years. This is another step towards helping people get a foot on the housing ladder”

Tony Armstrong CEO of Locality said:

“All over the country community organisations are working locally to tackle housing problems and create the affordable homes we desperately need. We believe community-led responses can play a bigger role in tackling our national housing crisis and we’ve been working with a range of partners to build capacity and develop solutions from the ground up. So we welcome this commitment by the Government to support the growth of community led housing. We stand ready to work with the Housing Minister to ensure that this fund will help communities to develop housing where it is needed most.”

Locality sees Community-Led Housing (CLH) as a key element of local communities taking control through the ownership and management of assets to meet the needs of local people. Locality is working with key partners including CLT Network, Confederation of Cooperative Housing, Uk Cohousing Network and Self Help Housing, to champion the community led housing sector. We will be working together to support community organisations to access this funding and take control of building the types of affordable housing that communities need.

Locality has an active, 50-strong Community Led Housing Members’ Group that can demonstrate success in developing affordable homes, and increasing numbers of our members are showing interest in creating affordable homes. We will be supporting community organisations to learn from each other and share learning and good practice, to ensure this money makes the maximum impact in communities.

CLH is an important driver for economic regeneration and community business, offering our members and other community organisations the potential to:

• build the affordable homes that communities need, including housing for vulnerable people and minority groups whose needs are not met by other housing providers
• shape the communities of tomorrow through good design, build standards etc.
• integrate other community run services alongside housing to empower communities to develop sustainable services
• capitalise on community strengths, build local capacity and stimulate economic activity leading to new skills and job opportunities.
• revitalise derelict buildings and land and thereby improve the local environment
