The Locality Awards ‘22!

Celebrating the transformative work of Community organisations

The Locality Awards ‘22 celebrate the transformative work of Community organisations.

On 9 November, the Locality Awards ‘22 Ceremony took place at Sheffield City Hall.

Our awards ceremony, hosted by the ever-exuberant Howard Bradley of LS14, is a chance to recognise and celebrate the impact and innovation shown by local community organisations, charities and councils across the country.

As ever, the Locality Awards were a real highlight of Locality’s annual Convention. An opportunity for members and delegates to have some fun and celebrate their incredible work.

A huge thank you to every applicant, finalists and, of course, to our winners. You are the people on the frontline in these challenging times. You are the people providing the essential services, support, and encouragement when people most need it. Your work is truly, truly lifechanging.

"We believe in the power of community to transform lives and create a fairer world. Our award winners embody this vision. These organisations have shown incredible leadership and creativity, in what have been extraordinarily challenging times. Their work is an example and an inspiration to us all. We are proud to be able to recognise and celebrate these achievements through the Locality Awards”

Tony Armstrong
Chief Executive of Locality

Power of Community Award: Back on the Map

The Power of Community Award celebrates a community organisation working with local people to shape their own future and to build a fairer society where everyone thrives.

Sunderland’s Back on the Map provide a wide range of services from community allotments to welfare support, tenancy support to digital inclusion programmes. Their projects are co-produced with their community and led by the needs of local people. Local residents account for 80% of their trustees.

“Being resident led is the golden thread of everything we do at Back on the Map. Winning the Power of Community Award really shows that we put the community at the heart of everything that we do. Resident engagement, collaboration, and involvement is central to transforming communities”

Jo Cooper
CEO of Back on the Map

Transforming Lives Award: One Community Development Trust

The Transforming Lives Award celebrates a community organisation whose support has had a significant impact on changing local people’s lives.

One Community Development Trust, based in Tilbury, Essex, was born out of the recession in 2008. They deliver employment programmes, money advice, and much more. Their Broadening Horizons project enables local people and families to visit places, sites and events outside of Tilbury, building their confidence and improving aspirations.

“All the years I've been coming to Locality, I would listen to other people winning the awards and think - could it ever be us? A small, locally based organisation? Today it's our turn. We’re delighted. It’s going to increase morale among our staff, our volunteers, and mean a lot to Tilbury. It will be such a wonderful thing for the local people, for me to come back and say we won”.

Yewande Kannike
CEO of One Community Development Trust

Enterprising Organisation Award: Adrenaline Alley

Sponsored by Endsleigh Insurance, the Enterprising Organisation Award celebrates a community organisation that has developed a creative business model that makes them successful and financially resilient.

Adrenaline Alley in Corby is Europe’s largest urban sports venue. This is a training venue for BMX, skateboarding, scootering and inline skating, offering beginner to elite (Olympic athlete) coaching. Adrenaline Alley has grown from a grassroots organisation seeking to create a safe space and sports facility for young people to a world class, and world beating venue. Through implementing training equipment, they have improved the overall level of the sports in the UK, leading to Olympic medal successes in 2021. They work closely with other community groups, helping them create sustainable projects and facilities.

“Winning the Locality award means the world to us. It's not just about Adrenaline Alley – the charity. It's about all the team that have worked behind the scenes. Right from the board down to the volunteers and the coaching staff”.

Founder of Adrenaline Alley

Their work brings the community together through education and events. They actively nurture artists and curators from marginalised communities.

“It's amazing to have this recognition. 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning has been working for 35 years. It's grown from a tiny grassroots organisation, to an established charity that reaches many diverse communities”.
