Introduction to recruitment

Getting recruitment right is vital, especially at a time when labour markets are tight.

‘Tight’ labour market definition: when job openings are plentiful and available workers are scarce.

Recruitment ensures that the workforce has the all the relevant skills and abilities to meet current and future needs. Effective resourcing is not just about filling an immediate vacancy, but about impacting the long-term success of the business.

Recruitment and resourcing involve attracting and selecting individuals into a job role. Line managers play a crucial role in ensuring that they select suitable candidates. It is essential that everyone involved in recruitment makes effective and fair decisions. The recruitment process will vary depending on the size of an organisation and resources.

However, each of the following stages should be followed:

  • Defining the role.
  • Attracting applicants.
  • Managing the application and selection process.
