Our vision

This charter aligns our membership network around our shared vision of a fair society where every community thrives.

Importantly, it recognises we cannot achieve it without understanding the structural inequalities that stand in the way and actively seeking to dismantle them.

There can be no social justice in our places without justice for everyone who faces inequality based on their background or identity. In particular, we are clear that racial justice is a foundational principle for our network.

We work together to create places where: 

• everyone has a say over decisions that affect their lives
• wealth flows into – and is shared fairly among – the whole community
• all people can access services that equitably meet their needs
• everyone is welcome, able to take part in their community, build relationships, and feel that they belong
• all groups are supported to build their capacity and capabilities at the grassroots, share their strengths, and collaborate to solve local problems together

All community organisations are at different stages of their journey, but we encourage them to be independent, resilient and sustainable by: 

• developing diverse business models
• using community enterprise to generate income
• owning (or aspiring to own) buildings and spaces

Our values

As a membership network, we are guided by three values:

• We are ambitious – pushing ourselves to do better and achieve more, thinking creatively and inspiring others
• We are respectful – constantly thinking about the impact of our actions, taking a friendly approach, and holding ourselves to high-quality standards
• We are fearless – confident in stating our case, pressing for positive change and holding people to account in a constructive and solution-focused way

• We work hard to connect, share and learn from each other

By agreeing to the statements in this charter, members agree to uphold the values and behaviours outlined above and to work collectively towards a fair society where every community thrives. 

Locality membership is also governed by specific Terms and Conditions.
