Community ownership unlocked training

Community Ownership: Will it work and who’s with you?

Taking over a local building or piece of land is a rewarding journey. It starts with two vital questions: Will it work (feasibility) and Who will support us (community engagement)?

This three-hour workshop uses Locality’s "Listen, Learn, Adapt" framework to move you from a 'good idea' to a 'solid plan'. We will explore the technical stages of Community Asset Transfer (CAT) - the process of moving buildings or land (like a shop, pub, library, or park) from local authorities or private businesses to be owned and managed by local people - while ensuring your project is inclusive and sustainable. After this deep dive into project feasibility and community engagement strategies, you will know how to answer: will community ownership work, and who will help you?

15 July 2026 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Our group workshops are the perfect blend of expert support and peer-to-peer learning. By the end of this session, you will leave with two essential tools for community ownership:

  1. A Feasibility Project Plan template: To prove you can acquire (buy), build or refurbish an asset (building or land).
  2. An Engagement Development Plan template: To ensure your community is at the heart of the project.

Delivered by Debbie Lamb, Development Manager and Katherine Newbigging, Digital Marketing and Communications Manager, Locality

You will learn:

1. Testing the idea to build a plan (Project Feasibility)

  • How to assess if a specific asset (building or land) is right for your group and community.
  • Understanding the "Long-term viability" (the financial health and legal governance) of your project.
  • Finding the data and support needed to back up your Feasibility Study.
  • Finding the money, an introduction to raising Capital Funding for asset acquisition and development (the large sums needed to buy or fix buildings).

2. Building support and meeting your communities' needs (Community Engagement)

  • How to set SMART aims (goals that are specific and achievable) for building audiences to support you.
  • Breaking down barriers: making sure your project is accessible and meets the needs of everyone in your community.
  • Digital tools vs. In-person: How to use social media, surveys, and public meetings and focus groups together for maximum impact.
